耗散结构理论在地理学中的广延。地理系统是一个远离平衡态的开放系统，它通过与外界不断地交换物质与能量，有可能在一定条件下形成新的稳定的有序结构，实现从无序向有序的转化，这种新的稳定的有序结构即地理耗散结构。一般的地理系统具有符合耗散结构的3个明显特点：①为开放系统；②远离平衡态；③地理系统内各要素之间存在着“非线性”的相互作用。作为一个远离平衡态的地理系统，从无序的混沌状态形成了耗散结构之后，就具备了一定的抵抗外界环境干扰的能力。外界环境所发生的一般性涨落（波动），会被具有耗散结构的地理系统所吸收，有时也把这种性质，称为地理耗散结构的“性”，或“涨落回归能力”。地理系统的耗散结构水平越高，其涨落回归能力越强，保持地理系统的稳定性越好。一旦发生难以抵御的巨大涨落时，可使地理耗散结构崩溃或解体，经过一定的演化，又会形成新的耗散结构形式。
