1887年在社会民主主义思想指引下成立。曾领导劳动群众争取改善切身利益的斗争，迫使资产阶级1895年实行劳动事故保险、1911年实行医疗保险。1908～1912年以M.特兰梅尔为首的挪威工党左翼组织和领导了造纸、冶金和矿工工人大罢工。1915年挪威工党参加了国际社会党第一次代表会议,签署了《齐美尔瓦尔德宣言》。1918年该党左翼在奥斯陆召开有 170多名代表出席的挪威苏维埃成立大会。1919年加入第三国际。但由于在一系列根本性问题上同第三国际存在分歧，一部分温和分子于1921年退出挪威工党，另外成立挪威社会民主党。1923年在退出共产国际问题上，工党内部再次发生分裂，左派退党另组挪威共产党。挪威总工会自1899年成立以后一直追随挪威工党，由于挪威工党退出第三国际和党的分裂，总工会亦发生分裂。1928年工党初次执政。1935年以来，除短期在野外，一直执政到60年代。该党是社会党国际成员。党员约16万人，多为工会集体党员。中央机关报是《工人报》。
