According to HU Shi s point of view,propounded in Chinese literature history,there were two concurrent but mutually conflicting lines constituted by the socalled civilian literature or the colloquialism literature and the temple literature or the aristocrat literature in the development of Chinese literature.
胡适认为中国文学进程呈示出平民文学或白话文学与庙堂文学或贵族文学两条并存对立的流变线索,而平民文学或白话文学则是贯穿始终的富有生气与活力的线索;五四新文学运动是有意识地以革命的方式继承并推动平民文学或白话文学的健全发展,而“平民文学”则成了文学革命的义旗与主潮,虽然20世纪中国文学走过曲折之路,但是“平民文学”仍在与“贵族文学”的抗争中顽强地屹立于文学多元格局之中轴。
