中国台湾电影导演。又名白担夫。1931年 6月10日生于辽宁海城。毕业于台湾省立师范学院，并在意大利电影实验中心实习。曾当过美术教员、记者、编辑。1958年从影当场记，参加影片《合欢山上》的摄制。1963年任中央电影事业公司制片部经理，主持摄制了《哑女情深》、《我女若兰》等片；同时在台湾文化学院任教。1966年开始任导演，第一部作品是与李行、李嘉合导的《还我河山》；1967年独立执导了他的第一部影片《寂寞的十七岁》，获台湾第6届最佳导演金马奖,接着导演的《新娘与我》获第 7届最佳导演金像奖。他执导的其他影片有《家在台北》、《再见阿郎》、《白屋之恋》、《我父、 我夫、 我子》、《枫叶情》、《人在天涯》、《摘星》、《皇天后土》、《金大班最后一夜》、《大轮回》(合导)等。1973年与李行合创大众电影公司。又创办白氏电影公司、亚美艺术公司等。他在引进西方电影新潮流、改变电影剪辑技巧，提高台湾70年代故事片艺术质量方面，有一定贡献。
