民主学校是一种体现校园民主的学校，以生活公约取代威权体制教育中的校规。民主学校很多样，各具特色。
伴随着师生平等的权力结构，弹性的课程设计、选课制或像瑟谷学校一样，完全不由成人主动安排任何课程，一切的教育由学习者为出发。这种以学习者为出发的教育理念，称为自主学习。
并非所以自主学习学校都和瑟谷学校一样，没有规定课程。在台湾的种籽学苑、台北市自主学习实验计划都有必选修制。
由于理念相近，民主学校同时也与在家自学的个人与组织联结，形成一年一度的国际民主教育年会，会中人们交流教育与学习的经验，并分享遇到的困难，寻求协助。
民主学校是另类学校中，学生有最大自由的一类。
