机读档案具有如下特点：①不能脱离特定的计算机硬件和软件而被读出和处理，如具备条件则是最便于处理和使用的档案。 其检索速度快， 查全率和查准率高。②有严谨的格式结构。在文件记录内划分区、字段和子字段，规定各自的构成内容与相互关系，规定各自的长度与识别方法。机读档案的存储介质一般有磁带、磁盘等。机读档案必须存放在符合一定技术条件的专用库房中， 对库内温湿度进行严格控制， 并配置除尘、防火、防高度磁场和电场的设施。
