《国朝院画录》全书2卷，可分3部分。第 1部分以时代先后为序,列顺治、康熙、雍正、乾隆四朝画院工匠画家53人。每人先列小传，后著录其载入《石渠宝笈》一、二、三编作品。作品著录除画名、装裱形式、内容、款识、题跋外,并录皇帝御题。第2部分为诸家合作画幅及无名氏画幅，涉及画家28人，作品大多只列画名。第3部分为《石渠宝笈》未著录,画家姓氏散见于志乘一集谱录各书者，则仅列其姓氏里籍于卷末。
该书虽属辑录之作，但甄录矜慎，体例周密，对于研究历代画院及清代宫廷绘画是一部有价值的参考书。
