一套动画的服饰设计的工作主要是为动画角色设计衣服和饰物。负责此职位的工作人员称为服饰设计师。多数动画的服饰设计会兼职人物设计师。
服饰设计师负责绘画的衣饰包括：内衣、外衣、泳装、晚装、其它特定服饰、头饰、鞋子、袜子以及身上饰物包括手表、戒指、项链等。原则上，服饰设计师会为每一个动画角色的衣服和手袋绘画其正面及背面衣饰的草稿各一张，而角色身上的饰物就只会绘画一张草图。不过却有例外情况，如动画作品没有设立身体检查的情节，便毌须绘画内衣的草稿；如动画作品没有安排海滩情节，便毌须绘画泳装的草稿。
不论是漫画或剧集改编，或是原创动画，服饰设计师占有重要的工作，而原创动画较改编动画的发展空间为多。事实上，日本有时装设计师亦是从服饰设计师出身。服饰设计占整套动画的创作约两周至三周的时间。
