cultural difference and rhetorical preference,textual interaction and the sense of audience,and textual or discourse competence and the constitutive principles of textual communication, aiming at contributing to the improvement of the teaching of English writing and the integration of the theories of English writing as well.

These seven standards function as the constitutive principles of textual communication,which is an important contribution to theory building in text linguistics and also greatly affect the research in contrastive rhetoric,translation studies,language teaching,and communication across cultures.

This paper, based on a brief discussion of some definitions of text, investigates major text linguistic schools of thought and constitutive principles of textual communication,so that a better understanding can be obtained.
