1837年，美国著名神秘小说作家兼诗人爱伦坡还未成名是，一位神秘的陌生人曾拜访过他，陌生人从兜里掏出一长纸给爱伦坡，将这纸上那段关于神秘液体的文字添进小说里，而且一个字都不许改动。爱伦坡接过那张纸尽管他觉得那人的要求实在太奇怪，但还是依命而行。1838年，他挑战《亚瑟-格登-皮姆的历险故事》在纽约出版，书中讲述的是主人公在南极洲附近某小岛上一次非同寻常的探险。在探险过程中，主人公遇到了一种神秘液体，书中主人公说：“我很难用语言描述这究竟是什么样的一种液体，他并非透明，但同时也没有一种固定的色，如同彩虹一般幻化出各种光芒，我们将一些液体放入玻璃杯中隔了一会之后，我们注意到它自动分成了许多小块，每块液体都有自己的形状，似乎一种强大的力量将它们各自切开，但很快它们又会融合到一起。科学家们一定会认为，这段文字是对液体水晶非常精确的描述，但问题是，液体水晶是在一个世纪之前才被人发现的，而且，液体水晶无法在常温压自然状态下被人们看见，因此爱伦坡也绝对没有可能见过它们，那么他是如河写出那段生动文字的呢？难道真有神秘客从未来返回过去告诉他应该如何写小说吗？
