“调年”是土家族的春节，它要先汉族的春节一天 。相传在明朝嘉靖年间，土家族的先民随胡宗宪征讨倭寇，在腊月二十九那天提前过了年，慰犒将士。将士们 吃了丰盛的酒席，养精蓄锐，到除夕那天狠狠打击了倭寇，取得了胜利。以后，为了纪念土家先人，土家人提 前过年，并相沿成俗。
土家族的调年是一年中最为隆重的节日，他们要在 调年期间举行丰富的喜庆活动。调年活动持续几天，甚至十几天。
