弱智儿童的教育是国家和社会不容忽视的问题。1986年10月由中国科学院心理研究所茅于燕教授等经过艰苦努力，创办了北京新运弱智儿童养育教授的指导下，根据落后儿童早期教育手学龄前的弱智儿童进院。养育院在茅于燕她亲自编写的《智力册》和教学方法，对行集体教学、集体活动和个别训练，开发他们的智力，并在平时注意培训儿童生活自理能力和社会适应能力。
目前，有近90名弱智儿童考入了北京市各区的培智中心学校，赢得了家长的信任，取得了良好的社会效应。该院现有教职员工19名，教师7名（其中5名是幼儿师范学校的毕业生），均经过专业培训，具有一定的弱智教育理论和教学经验。现有入园儿童60名，分大、中、小三个班，绝大部分为全托，少数为日托。
北京新运弱智儿童养育院自成立以来，有千余名国内外人士访问过该院，并被市区民政部门评选为先进单位。96年被民政部、卫生部、财政部、国家教委和中国残联评为“全国智残儿童康复训练工作先进单位”。
