      德育原则之一。要求社会主义思想品德教育从学生的实际出发,根据个性的不同特点,采用不同的教育方法。
  
  孔丘是中国古代最早重视因材施教的教育家,他了解学生的个性,并能针对个性不同的学生,进行不同的教育。朱熹把孔子的这一教育经验概括为"孔子教人,各因其材"。这一教育经验后来成为中国教育的一个优良传统。
  
  心理的发展可以分为婴儿期、幼儿期、童年期、少年期和青年期几个相互衔接的阶段,不同的年龄阶段有不同的心理特点(见心理发展阶段)。同一年龄阶段的学生,由于遗传素质、环境条件和所受的教育不同,又会具有不同的个性特点。因此,进行教育、教学应照顾到学生的不同年龄特点和个性特点。
  
  因材施教原则要求教育者深入了解学生,研究学生,熟悉每个学生的特点,有的放矢地进行教育,克服不从学生实际出发的主观主义。
