联合国粮食及农业组织（联合国粮农组织,FAO）成立于1945年10月16日。于是第20届联合国大会于1979年11月将10月16日定为世界粮食日，1981年起施行。设立此主题日旨在唤起世界对发展粮食和农业的高度重视。在这一天，世界各国应围绕联合国粮农组织确定的当年主题展开宣传活动。
