亦称情节性舞蹈。是通过一定的情节事件，来塑造人物、表现作品的主题思想的舞蹈。叙事性舞蹈和舞剧虽然都具有不同的人物和一定的情节，但它们却有根本不同的特质。叙事性舞蹈一般都比较短小，情节比较简单，不象舞剧那样有着复杂的情节、曲折的故事和尖锐的矛盾冲突。如舞蹈《难忘的泼水节》，表现了周恩来在西双版纳与傣族人民群众一起欢度泼水节的场面。把周恩来和人民群众同呼吸共命运的高贵品德，深入、紧密联系人民群众的优良作风，作了典型的概括和集中的艺术表现，成功地塑造出周恩来和傣族人民群众的舞蹈形象。
表现寓言、童话故事和具有一定情节事件的讽刺舞蹈，一般也归为叙事性舞蹈一类。寓言、童话舞蹈作品都富于幻想，习惯于采用夸张、比喻和拟人化的表现手法，以生动的情节和鲜明的舞蹈形象来表现一定的生活哲理,使人们从中受到启发和教育。如根据希腊寓言《农夫与蛇》创作的同名舞蹈，说明了"不要怜惜像蛇一样的恶人"这个生活哲理。中国民间舞蹈《鹬蚌相争》，以"鹬蚌相争，渔翁得利"的寓言故事，告诫人们要珍视友谊和团结，不要闹内部纠纷，以免两败俱伤，而使第三者得利。
