Gothic novel

   18世纪末、19世纪初在英国广为流行的小说形式。以表现神秘、恐怖为主要特征,题材多以中世纪爱情生活及家族纷争为主。名称来源与哥特式建筑有关:18世纪后半叶,英国哥特式建筑复兴,当时一贵族国会议员贺拉斯·华尔浦尔(1717~1797)在伦敦附近建一哥特式城堡,并在此自办印刷所,出版作品。1764年,他出版了自己创作的中篇小说《奥特朗托堡》,写12、13世纪时曼弗雷德霸占奥特朗托堡后遭报应的故事。由于华尔浦尔创作出版此类小说即在其哥特式城堡内;又由于此类小说与中世纪野蛮、血腥行为有关,因此称此类小说为哥特小说,《奥特朗托堡》则被视为此类小说的第一部。华尔浦尔的后继者很多,最有影响的作品有安·拉德克利夫的《尤道夫之谜》、马修·刘易斯的《僧人》、玛丽·雪莱的《弗兰肯斯坦》等。这类小说大多追求复古和超现实的刺激性,缺乏深刻的社会现实意义,但也反应了善恶斗争,而且在艺术上具有一定程度的欣赏价值。它们对19世纪的狄更斯、勃朗特姐妹、哈代、罗伯特·布朗宁等英国作家和霍桑、爱伦·坡等美国作家、霍夫曼等德国作家以至20世纪超现实主义小说和通俗、恐怖作品均有影响。
