中国戏剧家自愿结合的群众团体。原名中华全国戏剧工作者协会,1949年7月24日成立。1953年更名为中国戏剧家协会,会址设在北京,在全国除台湾省以外的各个省、市、自治区都设有分会。至1987年底，中国戏剧家协会的会员有7000余人,他们来自260多个剧种的近2000多个职业剧团，均为中国戏剧活动中有一定成就的剧作家、导演、演员、舞台美术家、戏剧音乐家、戏剧评论家、戏剧教育家以及戏剧领导人、活动家。
戏剧家协会每5年举行一次会员代表大会,选举协会理事，从理事中推选出常务理事、主席、副主席，作为它的常设领导机构，决定协会的方针大计。主席、副主席委托书记处或秘书长处理协会的日常工作。
