即红楼梦创作以曹氏家族为原型之学术观点自传说。代表人物是胡适，自传说的理论要点是认为《红楼梦》这部小说是以“真事隐”（甄士隐）的春秋笔法，借小说中贾府来描写曹氏家族的繁华旧梦，借小说中贾、史、薛、王四大家族的盛衰演变来描写曹氏家族由富而穷，最后“落了片白茫茫的大地真干净”的情形，通过小说而写出了封建社会贵族大家庭“坐吃山空，树倒猢狲散”的自然发展趋势。从这个意义上来讲，《红楼梦》小说不仅是一部自传体的小说，也是一部“自然主义的杰作”。自传说的代表人物是以此作为理论出发点的。奠定了“五四”以来新红学派在红楼梦研究中偏重于史学研究的系统的理论，将曹氏家族历史的研究和《红楼梦》小说的研究有机的结合在一起，这是其长处，它不足的地方是使后来者在对曹氏家族问题的研究上太过于执著，往往走火入魔，结果将红学蜕变为曹学。自传说的总纲即最重要的一回是第五回：“贾宝玉神游太虚境，警幻仙曲演红楼梦”。
