这种新物种的祖先是一只名叫奈达的母狼和一只德国牧羊犬巴伦。他们是被从众多同类中精心挑选出来的，心理和身理都最为稳定，并且是从幼时就开始专门为了该实验而被观察和筛选。到目前为止，研究者们已经培育出第三代狼犬，这些狼狗中，有八只拥有50%到70%的狼血统。
这些狼狗每天都进行大量的训练，事实上，他们也确实显示出了卓越的体能训练优势。研究所犬类专家普列韦-多罗费耶夫说，在模拟罪犯追捕训练中，一般的警犬需要三到四分钟才能作出气味和方向识别。而同等任务，狼狗只需15-20秒。一旦进入作案现场，它们可以在最短的时间内迅速找出可疑点，判断出罪犯甚至是毒品或炸药的下落。
