文竹是百合科天门冬属的植物，从品种上看分为：矮文竹、大文竹和细叶文竹，原产地为南非。有叫云片松、刺天冬、芦笋水草……它的茎杆具有攀缘性，色泽周年碧绿，远远望去，层层绿叶，似松非松，却有松之秀挺；似竹非竹，却有竹之清雅。从科学角度分析，文竹应属观茎植物。我们看到的所谓的叶实际上是它的叶状枝。竹子一般很少开花，所以有些人认为文竹也不开花。其实，只要培养得妥当、科学，年纪较大的文竹照样也能年年绽放花朵。文竹的花为白色，如扣子大小。
文竹不仅用于观赏，还有极高的药用价值。肉质根晒干备用或趁新鲜即用，叶状枝随用随采，均有止咳润肺，凉血解毒之功效。
