在一般意义上虚拟经济是以金融系统金融机构、金融工具和金融市场为主要依托、与虚拟资本的循环运动密切相关的经济活动。显而易见，虚拟经济是一种与实体经济相对应、与传统的物质生产及其有关的一切劳务活动相区别的经济形态。换句话说，虚拟经济是和资本运动相联系的经济，是一种资本独立化运动的经济，即以盈利为目的的资本是其运动的主体，并且资本以脱离实体经济的价值形态独立运动。就具体形态而言，虚拟经济有早期的以银行资本、股票资本运动为特征的经济形态，有后来的在价格剧烈变化条件下出现的以金融衍生工具为典型特征的经济形态，还有近年来随着网络技术进步所产生的以网络服务工具和场所（所有交易和清算都通过互联网络自动进行）为主要特征的经济形态。
