又叫扮社火或闹社火。是中国西北地区人民的民间舞蹈活动形式。它以歌舞为主，与武术、杂技、杂戏、焰火等融合在一起，形成一种群众性很强的广场表演艺术。在宋代，人们已经把元宵节和迎神赛会中的民间歌舞技艺表演叫做社火。如范成大的诗《上元纪吴中节物俳偕体三十二韵》有"轻薄行歌过，颠狂社舞呈"之句，自注："民间鼓乐谓之社火，大抵以滑稽取笑。"孟元老的《东京梦华录》卷八中也有："天晓，诸司诸行百姓献送甚多，其社火呈于露台之上。"至今在山西、内蒙古、陕西、甘肃、宁夏、青海等地还流传着这种形式。
社火的表演形式多种多样，内容丰富，其中包括舞蹈跑旱船、跑竹马、高跷、秧歌、狮子舞、龙舞等，此外有许多武术、杂技表演等。还有一种很有特色的造型艺术"芯子"，在陕西一带称"背芯子"，是社火中最有代表性的杂技表演。
