位于新疆东北部青河县境乌伦古河东支布尔根河段，1981年建立。河狸旧称海狸，为濒临灭绝的珍稀两栖动物。中国河狸只见于布尔根河沿岸。保护区位处狭长河谷内，面积约50平方公里，沿岸杨、柳丛生，为河狸主要食物来源。河狸皮毛为皮毛市场珍品。河狸臀部有储存香料的脂腺，分泌的香料称河狸香，为世界四大动物香料之一。河狸居住于水边洞穴，有两栖动物特点。为促进河狸繁殖,保护区已建立管理站,动员群众沿河多种杨柳，保证河狸食物来源；防止河狸天敌狗的危害；禁止捕杀河狸；建立河狸养殖场，作为人工饲养试验基地。通过上述措施，保护区内的河狸已由建站时的几十只增至几百只。
