全国计算机等级考试目前共设置四个等级：
一级定位为满足人们在一般性工作中对计算机的应用，重点是操作能力的考核。考核内容主要包括微型计算机基础知识、Windows操作和使用办公自动化软件及因特网(Internet)的基本技能。(2004年下半年开始增加WPSOffice,2005年上半年一级改名为一级MSOffice和一级WPSOffice)
一级B类以考核计算机应用能力为主，与全国计算机等级考试一、二、三、四级同属一个系列，其考核内容和水平与一级相当，考试采取无纸化形式，考生在计算机上完成答题，考试内容更加符合机关干部、企事业单位管理人员的需要。
二级定位为计算机程序员，可谓“计算机蓝领”。考核内容主要包括计算机基础知识和使用一种高级计算机语言(包括C、C、Java、VisualBasic、VisualFoxPro、Access等)编写程序以及上机调试的基本技能。(2005年上半年停考QBASIC、FoxBASE，增加C、Java和Access)
三级定位为“开发工程师”，重点在设计、管理、测试和技术支持。三级分为“PC技术”、“信息管理技术”、“数据库技术”和“网络技术”等四个类别，主要考核对应类别的应用系统的开发和维护的基本技能。
