| 电视卫星广播 television satellite broadcasting 利用地球静止卫星上的转发器向地面转播电视广播信号，供公众个体或集体接收的广播方式。个体接收系统中卫星的发射功率较大，用户的天线尺寸较小，设备简单；集体接收系统则相反。卫星广播是由卫星通信发展而来，但技术的进步使广播卫星转发器的发射功率更大，并用窄波束集中能量，显著地提高了地面的电波场强，使接收设备简单便宜，适于普及。1974年美国首次成功地进行了集体接收型卫星电视广播实验。1976年加拿大和美国合作进行了个体接收型卫星电视广播实验。卫星电视广播具有覆盖面积大，不受复杂地形影响，播出质量高，投资和维护费用低等优点。电视卫星广播系统由卫星、地面接收网和为卫星运行服务的上行站和测控站三部分组成，该系统正向着数字化、大容量和大功率的方向发展。
