七鳃鳗是一种典型的海河洄游性鱼类。它的寿命为7年。幼鱼在江河里生活4年后，经变态下海，在海里生活2年后又溯江进行产卵洄游。在洄游途中，常常依赖吸盘状口抓持与它们同一方向行进的大鱼，由其带着前进，并吸食其血和肉。到了产卵场，雌雄亲鱼共同合作挖巢、交尾、产卵排精，掩埋受精卵。经多次反复进行，直至雌鱼把卵全部排完，两亲鱼离巢而去。不久，亲鱼全部寿尽而死亡。
