系食管、胃和十二指肠、胆道、胰腺疾病的重要诊断方法之一。应用1～2％地卡因对咽喉进行喷雾麻醉后，将纤维胃或十二指肠镜经口腔缓慢插入，仔细观察胃和十二指肠各部位，对病变或有可疑病变的区域，可辅以活检和照像，主要用于食管、胃、十二指肠的炎症、溃疡、肿瘤和原因不明的急性上消化道出血的诊断。怀疑胰腺疾患和梗阻性黄疸，可通过纤维十二指肠镜观察乏特壶腹及其周围，并进行胰胆管逆行造影检查。对有严重心血管疾患、严重颈椎病变或畸形者应属禁忌范围。
