红塔山因山体顶部耸立有元代所建白塔而得名，始建于元代，该塔清道光十九年（1839）重建。“白塔夕照”成为新兴一景。1958年将白塔涂为红色，更名为“红塔山”，其景亦由“红塔朝晖”所取代。红塔山有“大红塔山”与“小红塔山”之分。玉溪烟厂所产名烟以红塔山为名，新成立的以卷烟工业为主体的跨行业跨地区的红塔集团，亦以红塔注册，1998年全国名牌评估其价值为386亿元，居全国第一位。
