英军在1940年的敦刻尔克战役中使用的matilda i坦克由于性能较差，抵挡不住德军的pzkpfw iii型坦克为主的进攻而很快被淘汰，转而开始生产matilda ii型步兵坦克。
matilda ii步兵坦克的研制代号为a12，1939-1945年间在英军中服役。它是英军自始至终参加了第二次世界大战的著名坦克。在阿拉曼战役之前，它是英军第8集团军装甲兵的主要装备。在阿拉曼战役之后，逐步被美制的m3和m4坦克所取代。
