环境污染经济损失因环境污染造成的直接和间接的经济损失。直接经济损失如排放工业有毒有害废水、废气造成鱼类死亡，农业减产，工业产品质量下降，人体健康遭受危害及畜禽死亡等。一般污染者和受害者关系较明确，经济损失量也可直接用市场价值来计量。间接经济损失则指由于环境污染，环境质量降低或功能下降，从而对依赖这一环境进行生产和生活的人们造成经济损失。这种损失的责任方往往不明确或难以确定，经济损失也较难准确计量。例如，因酸雨的污染危害造成农业减产、果树枯萎、建筑物腐蚀、水体酸化和水生生物减少或死亡。土壤酸化以及森林生长减缓甚至树木死亡等，其影响面广，影响期长，又难以确定准确的污染者。《中华人民共和国环境保护法》规定:造成环境污染危害的，有责任排除危害，并对直接受到损害的单位或者个人赔偿损失。对环境污染造成的间接损失，一般表现为外部不经济性，其损失只能通过有关环境政策和法规进行宏观管理和协调解决，如通过控制污染来减少经济损失，征收排污费进行补偿或通过地区与地区、国家与国家进行协调，采取共同对策与措施控制污染。环境污染的间接经济损失一般借助诸如机会成本、影子价格或影子工程费用等间接地进行计算。
