世界各国为了国际地球物理年建立了大量的地面观测站，并用气球、火箭和卫星等手段对地球和太阳的各种现象进行全面的系统观测。国际地球物理年专门委员会预计这一活动将会取得数量极为庞大的观测数据，在1957年决定成立国际地球物理年数据中心来进行观测数据的收集和交换工作。1960年，国际科学联合会理事会决定将国际地球物理年数据中心改为常设机构，定名世界数据中心。世界数据中心分A、 B、C3个中心：A中心设在美国,B中心设在苏联,C中心分设在日本和西欧。它所负责交换的资料涉及日地物理（太阳和行星际现象，电离层、地磁、极光、宇宙线、气辉）、气象、海洋、冰川和固体地球物理（地震、重力和固体潮、火山、海洋地质）等领域。
