叶甲科跳甲亚科的1种，俗称土跳蚤,菜蚤子。体小而善跳，是中国南北各地十字花科蔬菜以及甜菜的一种严重害虫。成虫食叶,幼虫食根,特别在幼苗期为害甚烈，常造成毁种,并可传播白菜腐烂病。成虫体长仅1.8～2.4毫米，长卵形而扁平。黑色光亮，触角基部3节,各足跗节深棕色，鞘翅中央有一黄色纵条,约占翅面宽度的1/3，其外缘中部向内凹曲，内缘中部直形。头顶前端具深刻点，前胸背板皮纹状，刻点散乱。鞘翅刻点略呈纵行趋势。1年发生3～6代。成虫寿命数月至1年。可连续产卵，卵产于菜苗附近土中。幼虫孵化后,沿细根食向主根,形成烂斑枯萎。6～8月发生最盛，天旱少雨则更严重。成虫越冬（见图）。
菜跳甲属中国已知近20种。有两种色型，一种鞘翅具黄条，一种无黄条。在黄条型中，除黄曲条菜跳甲外，还有黄狭条菜跳甲、黄宽条菜跳甲和黄直条菜跳甲，都是蔬菜的大害虫。前两种在华北很普遍，后一种限于华东和华南。
