肌肉在没有负重而又能自由所短的情况下收缩时，肌肉的长度缩短而张力没有改变，这种长度缩短而张力不变的收缩，称为等长收缩。当肌肉在两段被固定或负有不能拉起的重量的情况下收缩时，肌肉的长度不可能缩短，只能产生张力。这种长度没有改变而张力增加的收缩，称为等长收缩。
