由许多先天或后天的原因引起肾上腺皮质分泌皮质醇和(或）醛固酮不足而产生的一系列临床表现。临床上可分为急性和慢性肾上腺皮质功能不全。急性者多由于慢性肾上腺皮质功能不全时应激反应差而加重。长期应用大量皮质激素治疗，引起继发肾上腺皮质功能衰退，急性重症感染，特别是脑膜炎球菌败血症等引起肾上腺出血，以及双侧肾上腺切除等原因而引起肾上腺皮质功能的急性衰竭，临床很快出现严重休克而后进入昏迷，皮肤紫癜，血压下降，脉搏增速，呼吸困难等症状，病势凶险，须及时抢救。应立即补充肾上腺皮质激素、补液、控制感染等抗休克对症治疗。慢性者可因结核等损害肾上腺皮质引起或继发于垂体功能低下。
