呼伦湖为我国北方第一大湖，在广阔的比较干旱的草原上，呼伦湖处于最低点，湖周地势平坦，一望无际，湖区及其周围水域盛产鱼虾等水产品和芦苇，沼泽湿地连绵，这个方圆数千里内的唯一大泽，犹如一个巨大的磁场，吸引着众多鸟类，在湖区内栖息繁衍。呼伦湖区有鸟类17目40科241种。每当春季，数万只不同种类的鸟飞临湖区安家，主要鸟类有大天鹅、小天鹅、丹顶鹤、灰鹤、蓑羽鹤、白琵鹭等。
在呼伦湖区观鸟，最佳地点是在乌兰泡。如今，乌兰泡已成为国家级“呼伦湖珍禽湿地及草原生态系统自然保护区”的核心地域，各种珍禽候鸟将在这个神秘而幽静的世外桃源里过着自由的生活。也为观鸟爱好者提供了最佳的观鸟场地。
