当半导体由于外界作用注入非平衡载流子时，它处于非平衡状态。载流子间的复合使非平衡载流子逐渐消失。在注入非平衡载流子浓度不是太大的简单情况下，非平衡载流子按下列规律消失：Δn=(Δn)0exp(-t/τ)。显然，式中τ即为非平衡载流子平衡平均存在的时间，通常称为非平衡载流子寿命。由于在非平衡状态下，非平衡少子的影响起主导作用，因而τ又称为非平衡少子寿命，而1/τ表示非平衡载流子的复合率。非平衡载流子寿命是一个结构灵敏的参数，它与材料的种类、完整性、某些杂质的含量以及样品的表面状态有密切的关系。
