20世纪初，墨西哥出版业十分落后。第二次世界大战后,出版业开始发展。1950年，年度出书923种。1965年，年度出书4851种。1985年出版的图书已开始有部分出口。1985年，墨西哥拥有出版社970多家。出版社主要集中在墨西哥城、蒙特雷、瓜达拉哈拉。主要的出版公司是：墨西哥布鲁格拉出版公司、墨西哥大学D.C.比列加斯图书馆、猪神出版公司、阿吉拉尔出版公司。书刊发行渠道是：出版商－发行商－书商-读者，出版商－书商－读者。全国共有1000多家书店。全国性行业组织有：全国出版联合会、墨西哥图书协会。政府对出版和销售图书、期刊免征营业税，只从发行与销售出版物的总利润中提取一定比例的税收。对出口图书、期刊给予10％的额外补贴。1956年颁布版权法。1968年加入《世界版权公约》。采用国际标准书号，语区号为968。1985年，年度出书5482种。
