Through the analysis on the two cognitive mechanisms and the two types of meaning extension,it is found that the metaphorical mechanism is the cognitive basis of polysemy and that the metonymic mechanism is the major cognitive motivation of conversion,which also offers a new perspective to study the change of meaning.
