美国国防语言学院，创建于1941年，当时，主要向美国士兵教授日语。冷战期间，俄语是最热门的语言之一。在过去10年中，阿拉伯语的重要性日益增强。国防语言学院的主要任务是为美国陆、海、空军和各语言训练中心制订综合大纲；指导、帮助三军和各语言训练中心制订训练计划；满足各军、兵种对外国军事人员进行英语教学所提出的各项要求；对全军外语教学和英语教学给予必要的技术指导，即审批计划，提供方法，考核教员，审查教材、科目内容，规定教学要求，制定语言能力和技巧的考试标准。
该院领导机构设在华盛顿特区的恩纳科斯蒂奥海军营区，下辖六所语言学校和一个语言中心。目前，该学院有教职员工750名，有教室500多间、1200个语言教育座位和17处固定宿舍。它的图书馆有多种外国电视节目和40多种语言的8万卷藏书。这里每天都会接收到世界各国的新闻，以便让学员们进行口语运用。
该学院要求严格。来此学习的陆军、海军、海军陆战队士兵都必须通过一连串考试，然后才能被录取。一旦录取，他们每天要在课堂上学习6小时，每晚要做2～4小时的作业。课程时间取决于语言类型，从25周到36周不等。最难的语言（称为第4类）是日语、汉语、朝鲜语和阿拉伯语。
2001年美国遭恐怖分子袭击的"9·11事件"发生后，该学院的语言中心的阿拉伯语人才供不应求，美国军队和联邦调查局大量招收会讲阿拉伯语和波斯语的人员。这些人员在2002年阿富汗反恐怖战争和2003年伊拉克战争中，以及在阿富汗和伊拉克重建中，都发挥了重要作用。
