贯穿于事物发展过程的始终，并规定着全过程的根本性质的矛盾。基本矛盾解决了，事物就发生根本性质的变化，旧过程就让位于新过程。非基本矛盾为基本矛盾所规定和制约，但又影响着基本矛盾的发展和解决。基本矛盾在事物发展过程的不同阶段中，一般具体地体现为该阶段的主要矛盾。如生产力和生产关系的矛盾是人类社会及其过程的基本矛盾，它在社会发展的资本主义阶段则体现为生产的社会化和资本主义私人占有这一主要矛盾，表现在阶级关系上则是无产阶级和资产阶级的矛盾。在这种情况下，基本矛盾与该阶段的主要矛盾是同一的。但是，在一定条件下，基本矛盾也可能不体现为主要矛盾，而由某一非基本矛盾成为事物发展特定时期的主要矛盾。马克思主义关于基本矛盾的理论，要求人们既要正确地把握决定事物发展过程的本质的基本矛盾，又要了解基本矛盾在不同发展阶段的特殊的、具体的体现，了解基本矛盾和非基本矛盾之间的相互作用及其变化，以便根据矛盾的具体状况，及时地、正确地加以解决。
