研究历史上军事活动与地理环境之间的关系的学科。是军事地理学的组成部分，属部门军事地理学范畴。研究内容主要包括：①历史上某一国家或地区进行战争的地理环境及其对兵力部署、阵地构成、攻防态势、战争进程和结局等的影响；②历史上的山川险要、关隘城堡、交通要道等分布状况及其在历次战争中的地位和作用；③历史军事重镇的地理环境及其对军事活动的影响；④历代军事区划、疆界沿革、边防卫戍以及古战场的考察与论证；⑤历史军事地图的考证与历史军事地图集的编纂等。研究历史军事地理采取历史文献辨析与实地考察相结合的方法，找出某一国家或地区地理条件对军事行动影响的规律，为国防建设、进行战场准备和组织实施军事行动提供历史借鉴。中国古代一些历史、地理要籍中记载有丰富的历史军事地理研究成果。北魏郦道元的《水经注》,涉及历史战事300余例，记述有在战场上起过重要作用的山岳、 关隘、河川、渡口、桥梁、 道路、仓储等兵要地理内容。明末清初顾祖禹撰《读史方舆纪要》，有大量论述明代各地的历史沿革、地理形势、山川险要、古代用兵攻守成败之得失等军事地理内容。中华人民共和国成立后编纂出版的《中国历史地图集》、《中国人民解放军战争史图集》和《陕西省军事历史地理概述》等书对研究中国历史军事地理都有重要参考价值。
