英国作曲家。1900年12月22日生于伦敦。1918年入伦敦皇家音乐专科学院学作曲和钢琴，毕业后继续从私人教师学习音乐。1926～1955年在皇家音乐专科学院任教。1929～1931年曾在柏林攻读音乐学和哲学。1935年参加英国共产党。1936年在伦敦组织工人音乐协会，任该协会主席40年。他的早期作品采用复杂的现代派音乐手法，以弦乐四重奏《辩证法》(1929)为代表；后转向使用通俗易懂的音乐语言，并重视作品的民族风格。重要作品有歌剧《沃特·泰勒》（1950）、《摩尔黑人》(1955)、第2交响曲《诺丁汉》(1949)等。
