释师备。俗姓谢。闽人也。少而憨黠酷好垂钓。往往泛小艇南台江自娱。其舟若虚。同类不我测也。一日忽发出尘意。投钓弃舟。上芙蓉山出家。咸通初年也。后于豫章开元寺具戒还归故里。山门力役无不率先。布衲添麻芒鞋续草。减食而食语默有常。人咸畏之。汪汪大度虽研桑巧计不能量也。备同学法兄则雪峰存师也。一再相逢。存多许与故目之为备头陀焉。有日谑之曰。头陀何不遍参去备对曰。达磨不来东土二祖不往西天。存深器重之。先开荒雪峰。备多率力。王氏始有闽土。奏赐紫衣号宗一大师。以开平二年戊辰十一月二十七日示疾而终。春秋七十四。僧腊四十四。闽越忠懿王王氏树塔。备三十年演化。禅侣七百许人。得其法者众推桂琛为神足矣。至今浙之左右山门盛传此宗法嗣繁衍矣。其于建立透过大乘初门。江表学人无不乘风偃草欤。
