本船原为1923年美国建造,属於民生公司之客轮"太湖"号. 1949年投共而於1950年六月廿二日被执行封锁大陆任务的"太仓"舰在外伶仃洋海上截获没入,当年八月编入海军担任弹药补给运输舰,命名"南湖"编号"akl 314",曾在大陈任务舰队服役.
