      日冕的形状同太阳活动周期有关,在相对黑子数极大时,日冕近于圆形;而在黑子数极小时则较扁,赤道区延伸较远,两极区延伸较近,且有羽状物。因此,日冕的形状也与黑子数一样,有11年的变化周期。通过日冕形状与球对称的偏离程度的测量,可粗略得到日冕的周期变化的定量结果。利用任何一个日冕等亮度圈(根据白光、偏振光或单色光拍到的日冕照片,通过光度测量求出离太阳不同距离和不同方位角处的亮度,把亮度相同的各点连接起来的曲线),可定义日冕的扁度ε 为
