白色粉末，外观与熟石灰相似。具有类似氯气臭味。视密度0.65-0.8g/cm3。有毒！吸入人体引起鼻塞喉痛，重者中毒。是强氧化剂，与有机物、易燃液体混合能发热自燃，受高热会发生爆炸。暴露于空气中，易吸收水分和二氧化碳即分解放出次氯酸和氯气。次氯酸随即分解生成氯化氢和新生氧。新生氧的氧化力极强，具有破坏色素团的能力，使有色物质褪色，达到漂白效果。有消毒、杀菌能力。溶解于水，呈碱性反应。由于组成中含有氯化钙，容易吸潮，故性质极不稳定。久置后，即使不遇空气和水，本身也能分解而降低它的有效成分。
