白掌长臂猿体长42～64厘米,后肢长10～15厘米,体重5～7千克,无尾.有黑褐色或棕黄色两种色型,雌雄两性都有.身被密长,蓬松的毛,其手,脚为白色,脸部周围有一白色毛环.
栖息于热带雨林中,树栖性,喜在树上攀爬跳跃,也能在地上双足行走,营家庭式生活.以嫩枝芽,树叶,果实,昆虫,鸟卵为食.妊娠期为7个月,每胎产1仔.
产于云南西南部.白掌长臂猿现存数量很少,为了保护这一濒于灭绝的稀有动物,我国已在南滚河建立了自然保护区.
属于国家一级保护动物.
