三大合成材料之一。以天然气、煤、石油等自然资源为基础，通过有机合成方法使其转化成具有一定结构的简单分子，再通过加聚反应或缩聚反应成为具有高弹性的高分子化合物。1914年世界上首次合成出甲基橡胶。按性能和用途的不同，可分为通用橡胶和特种橡胶两大类。前者的基本性能和用途与天然橡胶相似，主要包括丁苯橡胶、顺丁橡胶、异戊橡胶、乙丙橡胶、氯丁橡胶和丁基橡胶等；后者具有特殊性能，因而可用于特殊场合，如耐高温、低温的硅橡胶，耐油的聚硫橡胶和丁腈橡胶，特别耐腐蚀的氟橡胶等。
