植物形态：多年生水生草本，地下生匍匐茎，多须根，茎出水面直立，高可达2.5米。叶二列式互生，狭长线形，长0.8~1.3米，宽4~10毫米。花黄绿色，单性，穗状花序，似蜡烛状，高达2.5米，苞叶2~8片，早落，花穗细长，圆柱状，雌花穗黄色，位于下部，中间相隔2~15厘米，全长达50厘米，上部雄花穗长20厘米，花被鳞状或毛状、雄花具3雄蕊，雌花子房上位，1室。果为小坚果，果穗似蜡烛状，赭褐色。 生态分布：产我国南北各地沼泽地带；多生于水泽或湿地，田边。 药用部分：花粉（蒲黄）或根茎（水蜡烛根）入药，夏季采收。 用途：（1）蒲黄，性味甘、凉，无毒。为止血药，能利水道，消肿排脓。治咳血，吐血，衄血，便血，尿血，子宫出血，痔出血；并治疗膀胱炎及尿道炎，妇女月经不调，带下崩漏症，外用为撒布剂，治创伤，湿疹。（2）水蜡烛根，性味微苦、寒，无毒。能消肿行血；治白带，调经，牙痛。用量：蒲黄1钱5分~5钱；根1钱~1两，孕妇忌用。
