   地球表层的岩石圈在大气圈、水圈、生物圈的影响下,经过长期的物理、化学、生物的风化作用形成的有一定形体的松散壳层。平面范围与暴露地表的范围相当,厚度决定于风化作用所能涉及的深度,由几十厘米至几百米不等。
    风化壳按平面形态可分为面状、线状、囊状风化壳。按风化壳发育的阶段可分为以下类型:①寒带高山气候下以物理风化为主的岩屑型风化壳。②温带半干旱气候下,化学风化早期的硅铝-碳酸盐型及硅铝-硫酸盐型风化壳;或者干旱区的硅铝-氧化物-硫酸盐型风化壳。③温带森林气候下,化学风化中期的硅铝粘土型或高岭土型风化壳。④热带、亚热带湿热气候下,化学风化晚期的铁铝型或砖红壤型风化壳。
   风化壳剖面结构自上而下具有明显的垂直分带,依次为:土壤层、全风化的风化土层带、强风化的风化碎石带、弱风化的风化块石带和微风化的风化裂隙带,最下部为未风化岩。各层之间为逐渐过渡。
    风化壳内往往会有地下水或残积矿体。风化壳的存在往往影响工程建筑。通过对风化壳物质迁移与分布规律的研究可以恢复古气候。
